American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA)
The American Dental Hygienists’ Association, known as the ADHA, is the largest national organization representing dental hygienists in the United States. Founded in 1923, the ADHA advocates for the dental hygiene profession, supports dental hygiene education, and works to advance oral health for all Americans.

The ADHA represents tens of thousands of licensed dental hygienists, dental hygiene students, and educators across the country. Its members work in a wide range of settings including private dental offices, community health clinics, schools, hospitals, and research institutions.

One of the ADHA’s most important roles is advocacy. The organization works at both the state and federal level to expand the scope of practice for dental hygienists, meaning the range of services they are legally permitted to perform. This is a big deal because in many states, dental hygienists are fighting for the right to provide preventive care in underserved communities without always requiring a dentist to be physically present. Expanding access to care in this way could significantly improve oral health outcomes for millions of people who currently have little to no access to dental services.

The ADHA also sets educational and professional standards for the field. It supports accreditation of dental hygiene programs and encourages continuing education so that hygienists stay current with the latest research, techniques, and technology.
For dental hygiene students, the ADHA offers scholarships, networking opportunities, and resources to help navigate the path from school to clinical practice. For working hygienists, membership provides access to professional development, advocacy support, and a community of peers who are passionate about elevating the profession.

As a registered dental hygienist myself, the ADHA represents the kind of professional backbone that reminds us dental hygiene is not just a job. It is a healthcare profession with its own body of science, its own ethical standards, and its own voice in shaping public health policy.
